They say blondes have more fun, but when it comes to maintaining the color, it can be a pain in the butt. Too easily can your hair turn from platinum to yellow to even a weird rusty color. But have no fear, purple shampoo is here! Why does it need to be purple? Remember the color wheel from back in kindergarten?

Yellow and purple are opposite each other on the color wheel so when put together, they cancel each other out leaving behind the color you put in the effort to get. Kind of neat, right? If it’s orange hair you are trying to get rid of, opt with a shampoo with a bit more of a blue or violet hue. When I attempted to bleach my own hair at home, it was a hot mess of both yellow and orange. I put several violet and purple shampoos to the test are here’s a list you’re sure to love.

Ice Cream No-Yellow Shampoo

This purple shampoo gets it’s deep purple hue from grapes and it’s so purple, it’s almost black. It has a fantastically light grape candy scent that I just can’t get enough of. Leave this on your hair for only a few minutes and it will erase any yellow tones you have. It revives platinum hair so well, that every time I use it, people ask if I just got my hair done. It really is amazing. Because of the amount of purple in Ice Cream No-Yellow Shampoo, it’s not advisable to use it everyday. If you do, it’s very likely that your hair will turn, well, purple. As pretty as purple is, it’s not quite the look we’re going for. Best for: Getting rid of dark yellow spots, reviving platinum blonde, accentuating fading highlights.

John Frieda Violet Crush Purple Shampoo

As the name suggests, this products gets it’s name from crushed violets. The violet shade makes it perfect for eliminating orange brassy tones and it’s accompanying conditioner leaves your hair as soft as if you just got back from the salon. The price point of Violet Crush can’t be beat and it’s readily available at most drugstores (or by clicking here). This shampoo does not contain strong enough pigment to turn your hair violet, so it’s safe to use more often. Best for: Orange and brassy hair and damaged hair that needs softening.
